Attic Insulation & Home Performance — FAQs

Phoenix attics hit 160°F in July. What's above your ceiling matters more than what's outside your wall. Here's what to know about insulation upgrades.

Attic Insulation & Home Performance — FAQs

Insulation is the most overlooked Home Performance upgrade in Phoenix, and one of the highest ROI. Here's the picture.

How much insulation do I need in a Phoenix attic?

Current Phoenix code calls for R-38 in the attic (about 12 inches of blown-in fiberglass). Many homes built before 2005 only have R-19 to R-30 — and what was installed has often settled and lost effective R-value. A top-off to R-38 typically costs $1,500–$3,500 for a typical Phoenix home and pays back in 3–5 years through cooling savings.

What kind of insulation do you install?

Owens Corning ProCat fiberglass blown-in insulation. Made with recycled glass content, carries Owens Corning's limited lifetime manufacturer warranty for the original homeowner, and lays in evenly for consistent R-value across the attic. We can top-off existing insulation or do full re-fills.

How do I know if my insulation has settled?

Stick a ruler in the attic insulation. If you measure less than 12 inches and your home is 15+ years old, you're probably below R-30. Visual inspection during a free Home Energy Audit measures actual R-value across the whole attic — there's usually high variance from one section to another.

Is the attic hatch a big leak point?

Yes, often. An uninsulated attic hatch is essentially a hole in your ceiling — conditioned air rises through it, hot attic air drops down. We install hatch covers and weatherstripping as part of full attic insulation work.

What about radiant barriers?

Radiant barriers reflect heat back toward the roof. They work in Phoenix. The catch: they're only effective if they have an air gap on at least one side and they're installed correctly. A radiant barrier laid directly on top of insulation does basically nothing.

Can I claim a tax credit on insulation work?

Yes. The federal 25C tax credit covers 30% of insulation costs up to $1,200/year, with no income limit. APS and SRP also have weatherization rebates for qualifying work. We coordinate the paperwork.
